My Students

Do you remember what it was like to not have the correct materials to complete a project? This is what my students face each day. I teach 40 at-risk, low income 7th and 8th grade students. These students are with me all day because they have not been successful in the regular school setting.

The students are all on free or reduced lunch, and they do not have much of a home life.

They have been unsuccessful in school, and I am the only consistent thing in their life. This is the second year I have had these students, and they are showing so much growth and achievement. They are starting to feel what it feels like to be successful and what they need to do to be successful. They have learned how to take responsibility for their learning and their life. Most of these students never had higher than a D on their report card until they came to my program. Our school district does not have extra money to purchase supplies, so we have having a difficult time working on our Abe Lincoln's picture book project. This is a project they really want to complete.

My Project

We live in the "Home of Abraham Lincoln"!! My students decided they wanted to complete a special project for Abe’s birthday next February. Since I have these students for two years my 7th grade class has taken on this task. We are going to video Abe's life while he was in Springfield. We will be creating biographical video picture book about Abe Lincoln. We will have these books professionally digitally done, and we will distribute them to local area elementary schools. We have a local company that is donating the book bindings, but we are in need of a high quality digital video camera. We will be visiting, researching, and photographing Lincoln's home, the Old State Capital, New Salem, Lincoln's Tomb, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Lincoln's Presidential Museum, Lincoln Library and Lincoln's Depot. These places were all very significant his life, and since they are right here in our town we have the means to visit and research them. Each student will have to create their own digital book.

You will make such a huge difference in my students lives.

When my students are excited about something it is very important that I take that topic and build on it. Most of my students have never taken a video before due to lack of cameras, and you will give us the opportunity to learn how to take video of different objects and create a story with the camera. Since Abe Lincoln's birthday is so important in our town the students decided they wanted to do something to contribute to the ceremony.
