My Students

How can you get students excited about the classics? How about choosing a timeless novel & pairing its teaching with hands-on activities? I want to make Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" come alive by adding lessons on croquet, waltzing, and proper English tea. Students will love "living" this novel!

At my school, I am responsible for teaching Language Arts in 7th grade.

Additionally, my classroom is where children with special learning needs find their home. This new school is a wonderful place to teach, and I couldn't be prouder to join the elite team of teachers employed at the school. However, being a new teacher with a family of her own does come with challenges - primarily those of the financial variety. I am a teacher who loves her students and has big dreams for each of them, but I am also a teacher who has limited resources with which to accomplish those dreams. It is my hope to begin building resources like the ones I'm requesting for the "Alice" project to help me become a teacher of the same caliber as my more experienced peers -- the kind my students deserve.

My Project

The "Alice in Wonderland" project is something that a colleague and I developed last year, when we were both first-year teachers. To teach classic literature and poetry, we brought in Lewis Carroll's classic novel to engage students in a world of non-sense and creativity. To make the novel come alive, we used what resources we could to re-create scenes from the book: falling Down the Rabbit Hole, the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, the Queen's Croquet match, and the waltz in the Lobster's Quadrille. As my colleague has now moved on to another teaching assignment, it is my hope to continue the success of the "Alice" project for future students. Many of the rising 7th graders already know about the project and are looking forward to participating in the "Alice" activities. In order to carry this tradition on, I'm asking for a class set of Carroll's novels and a croquet set to keep in the classroom. These items will serve hundreds of students over the years as they experience "Alice."

I would greatly appreciate any considerations for funding this project.

I truly believe that helping me give students this opportunity to "live" in Lewis Carroll's Wonderland will inspire them to hold a greater appreciation for literature -- even the classics, which are always a hard sell. I thank you for your time reading this proposal and hope that you will consider helping me keep the "Alice" project alive on my own!
