Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“The care of the Earth is our most ancient and most worthy, and after all our most pleasing responsibility. To cherish what remains of it and to foster its renewal is our only hope.” Wendell Berry has inspired my students, and with your help they will learn how to renew and cherish our Earth.

I am teaching Environmental Science to 11th and 12th grade students in a high needs urban high school in New Mexico.

Currently, only a few of my students finish high school and go onto college or are able to enter into a high paying profession. One reason for the low success rate is that students don't find their classes engaging or relevant to their lives. To address our low success rate, my school is planning to form career pathways to inspire students to find a profession that interests them, and supply them the knowledge and tools to be successful in their future endeavors. My hope is to inspire my students about possible a career pathway of environmental science and green technologies. I would like to take this course and make it an exciting subject that my students will not only enjoy but will incorporate some of the basic principles into their daily lives.

My Project

I hope to inspire my students with the story of a committed individual who fought against environmental injustice and spurred the environmental movement. We will examine how Rachel Carson handled the challenges, controversies, and obstacles of became an environmental activist. My environmental science class will read her book, conduct group discussions, and analyze the topics presented in the book through book reviews and class presentations. By reading this book I hope my students can see how all living things are connected in a complex web of life, and how pesticides and pollution can have devastating effects on the environment. We will explore alternative energies, water and land usage and wildlife conservation. Your donation will help my students apply these lessons to their daily lives and shed light on local environmental issues.

New Mexico is rich in renewable resources and my hope is to create this rigorous course to inspire students to utilize their local environment in healthy and sustainable ways.

By the end of the course I hope to transform my students into global environmental stewards.
