This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There are so many amazing advancements classroom technology. Research proves that the use of these tools does enhance students knowledge of math curriculum...the problem is, we don't have any money for these tools!

I have the most adorable middle school kids ever!

I teach 7th and 8th grade math in a small farming community in Northern California. Don't be fooled by the region they grow up in--we are half way between San Francisco and Sacramento so these kids are definitely street smart! They are mostly low income so many of them have to maximize their experience in the classroom because they have a lot of responsibilities at home, such as, caring for siblings, working on farms, and caring for animals of neighbors to make extra money for their families. These kids are such hard workers! They deserve the best education!

My Project

An ELMO document camera is like a digital camera that displays on the screen what is put under it. It also has several cool buttons to allow you to save pictures, freeze frames, and bring up previous freezes. Most importantantly, it will allow me to display the math more visually. It will provide my students an equal opportunity to visually see how to use the manipulatives (ie hands on tools they play with) appropriately. It will also give students an opportunity to learn from each other by displaying student work samples. I can also create slides (sorta like a power point) that can be mixed up to have the students rearrange mathematical proofs. Not to mention an ELMO is very environmentally friendly. It does not require expensive plastic transparency sheets.

In California, we are notorious for low test scores in math.

The standard way of teaching mathematics (that most of you are used to), we call "chalk and talk," has not prove itself to be successful. It is boring and not engaging. Unfortunately, without these cool technological tools, math teachers are forced to be boring. I truly want to make a difference in the way math is taught but I need some toys to do so! Help make a difference in these kids lives!
