My Students

On the streets of cities throughout the United States teenagers make choices without the help of a good role model. Often they feel that they are left to their own volition and that they are all alone. What our teenagers need is a good role model and to know that others have been in their shoes.

My students' goals are to become first generation college students.

They might come from a low-income household where parents work multiple jobs to keep their family afloat. The school that they attend is full of dedicated teachers and administrators who want to see students achieve. Sometimes, students are afraid to ask for help or believe that no one else understands them. It takes an important lesson to give them the message that the community cares about their success and that they do not have to fight alone to become great! The future they want is held in the choices that they make. We are here to help them make the right choices and to reach success.

My Project

My students will able to read Wes Moore's book The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates and understand how they are not alone in a world of difficult decisions. The book will hopefully unearth an understanding of how our choices as teenagers affects our future and our lives as adults. Often teenagers separate the events of the present and how they might be linked to the events of adulthood; Wes Moore's book helps to explain this connection by comparing choices and the effects that each choice had on two different men and their resulting lives as adults. The power is in the author's candid reliving of his teenage years as an adult and explaining his choices and how others need to reflect on their decisions as a teenager as well.

Without the guidance of a role-model teenagers can make choices that they will regret forever.

It is my hope that with this book young men and women will see the importance of their actions in the present and the effect that they will have on their future. Wes Moore's book will help them to make choices and to reach out to people that might assist them to make positive choices instead of negative ones. The power of an education will give them the power to make the right choices.
