Turtle Adventures In 4th Grade

My students need a new aquarium for Franklin, our red ear slider turtle.

My Students

Save our turtle! Franklin our turtle needs a new habitat. Franklin has outgrown his first home and desperately needs a larger one. Without a new habitat, my students will not be able to keep him. Franklin helps my students to understand fresh water habitats, reptiles, and responsibility.

My students attend a public elementary school in a rural town in South Carolina.

We have a large population on free and reduced meal programs, but do not qualify for federal assistance. Many of my students are below grade level in reading and math and having a class pet is a great motivator.

My Project

I am requesting a larger aquarium kit for our turtle. My students will assist in setting up the new tank which will include reading for set up directions and math to measure the right amount of water for the tank. Students will be able to make predictions and understand cause and effect relationships. What will Franklin do in a larger tank? What might happen to Franklin's size now that he has a larger habitat? Having this aquarium will offer students a first hand view of water habitats and reptiles. Most of all, students will develop a sense of responsibility in caring for the turtle.

Donations to this request will save a classroom pet.

The turtle has outgrown its current tank, and we have been told for its well-being it must be replaced. This turtle provides motivation for my students as well various learning opportunities in all areas of our curriculum.
