Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's really true! It's very simple! Exciting choices on the bookshelf lead to better readers. Scientific studies show that when students choose their own books and have a broad selection of books to choose from, they read more.

Our third grade students in this rural Eastern Oregon town come from 70% "free and reduced lunch" families.

Most of them speak Spanish at home. Few have a lot of books in their homes. Many parents work in the orchards and fields of this wheat, peas, apple and wine country. Thus, our students are working hard to become better readers, but still struggle with the volume of vocabulary, phrases and sayings of the English language.

My Project

My students need to be introduced to the characters and intrigues of their first chapter books. With your help they can delight in the Boxcar Children's antics, discover mysteries, search for clues with Encyclopedia Brown and read about real people like Edison, Kennedy, Helen Keller, Eleanor Roosevelt and the Beatles. While making their own reading choices, they will improve their reading fluency and vocabulary. They will find out that reading is a great deal of fun and begin to learn the intricacies of the English language.

My third graders need these books at their fingertips to peruse and share anytime. This is when their view of the world begins to expand beyond their family to encompass ... well, everything! These books may be what excites them to read for fun and go on to explore the universe or the ocean depths. I can't buy these without help. I have just moved to a third grade classroom and have few books and a small budget. Thank you for whatever you can do.
