Fostering a Love of Literacy through Audio and Text

My students need a listening center with 8 headphones and a junction box.

My Students

“There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all.” - Jacqueline Kennedy One of the most powerful and important ways to develop a love and knowledge of literacy is through listening to quality texts.

I have yet to meet my wonderful third grade students, but through previous work children, I know that one of the biggest gifts we can give them is a love of literacy.

It is suggested by educators and researchers across the board that children get read to at least once a day, but with the world we are living in, this is often not a possibility. In some communities, the time available to read aloud is more scarce than in others. In our elementary school, the percentage of students on free or reduced lunch plans is above 70% - qualifying it as a Title I school. Many students live in rental housing and there is around a 33% turn over of students from September to June - meaning that one-third of students will leave during the year. While the homes of these children are overwhelming loving and strong, they are often busy households with parents or family members working long hours. Providing a time for students to listen to stories while in school is essential for an equitable education.

My Project

I am requesting the components of a listening center that can serve up to eight students at one time. The first piece is a Sony CD/Cassette player that will play rewritable CDs - so important for all of the books on CD that I have made over the years! I am so excited by the prospect of being able to play CDs and cassettes - it greatly expands the possibilities of what we can listen to. Since the boombox also plays rewritable CDs, students will be able to listen to stories recited and recorded by fellow and past students! I have also asked for a junction box that will support eight listeners and eight accompanying headphones. The headphones are of really great quality so that they will last for years, as well as super comfortable for the kiddos' ears.

As a first year teacher, I am really trying hard to provide an equitable and rich environment for my students.

I believe that with so many different types of learners coming into the classroom it is especially important to provide resources for them all.
