Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are sophomores and juniors in high school. They are in a Health Academy setting with awesome dreams of being nurses, doctors, saving peoples lives in the Health Care Field. My high school is 98% Hispanic or Mexican American students. We are a new high school full of many dreams.

My students are funny, energetic and very committed to their family.

This year is my first year I will be teaching a Health Careers Class. Our High School will not have our first graduating class till 2012. We are located on the outskirts of town in a somewhat rural community with some students who do not have indoor running water and others who have nice homes. This is my third year teaching at this establishment. We have students who come from foster care, group homes and detention centers. Our school provides students sometimes with the only two hot meals they will receive for the day. We have a family center that services at least 60% of our families with free groceries, clothes and tries to help them with furniture and other needs. Some of our student do not go more than three miles from their homes. Last year we did a visit to UNM which is about 10 miles from their home and we were trying to pick a restaurant and at least 1/2 of my students didn't have a clue.

My Project

Buying school supplies is hard for some of my students. Last year I spent more than $500.00 for binders so my students would be able to keep their homework and school activities in my classroom. When we started the project phase of my curriculum I had two flash drives, needless to say we used them, and used them to store work. I remember asking my students 'if you could, could you please buy a flash drive so you can keep your work' and I had one student beg me for one of the drives so he could download his work and the student got suspended and we lost 5 peoples work until he came back. As a result the four other students had to start over. We have 5 computer labs we can access so my students are never on the same computer or lab for more than two weeks at a time. Having these flash drives will insure that the students will save their work and I can keep it in the classroom at all times. My students that bought flash drives did share them with the other students whenever possible.

I would appreciate it greatly if you would consider funding this project so the students who don't have will not need to borrow from those who have with the risk of someone not being in class the date the project is due.

I use to work at a school where school supplies were not an issue. Even though these students are full of hope and dreams the reality of their home life comes into play every time a request is made to have supplies above and beyond paper and pens. Technology is not a reality.
