Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Pearl S. Buck once wrote, "Order is the shape upon which beauty depends." Teaching organization to Sixth grade students is comparable to teaching monkeys to walk in a straight line. No matter the difficulty, if students are able to learn organization at an early stage in life, we will all benefit!

I teach in a high poverty, low-socioeconomic neighborhood, and it is extremely difficult for many parents to purchase school supplies.

My students are so bright and full of potential that I cannot stand to see them do without the materials they need to succeed. For the past two years, I have purchased these materials on my own, but that is becoming more and more difficult.

My Project

Our school district has adopted a new curriculum this year, and it calls for students to create reader's and writer's notebooks in which they will compile work samples, book lists, and so on. I have requested 1-1/2 inch binders with 5 dividers that will serve as the students' combined reader's/writer's notebooks. Starting on the second day of school, students will begin giving their notebooks a personal touch by decorating them and creating lists of books they have read, their all-time favorites, and books they hope to read this year. As I teach mini-lessons on important reading and writing skills, they will include these notes in a resource section and can refer back to them throughout the year. These notebooks will help my students become organized, which will also prepare them for the future.

At the beginning of the school year, I tell students to visit with me privately if they have any issues obtaining school supplies.

It would be such a blessing to hand a notebook with dividers to those students who cannot buy their own. Thank you in advance for your generosity and compassion.
