Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have very limited access to books. Many of their families are struggling to pay for rent, utilities, and food. Books are a luxury that their families cannot afford. Moreover, in this last year, our local library has drastically cut their hours due their own budget problems.

When I was young, my sisters and I had books everywhere--in our rooms, in the living room, in the car.

We even took books with us when we went camping and on vacations. Unfortunately, my students do not have access to the same luxury of books or reading. It is very hard for them to not only practice their reading, but to also develop a love and a passion for reading when they do not have books at home to read. I have always encouraged and, even, helped my students borrow books from our local library. However this year, our local library has shortened their daily hours and is now closed two days a week. These restricted hours make it harder and harder for their parents to take them regularly to the library to lend and return books. I want my students to want to read, to love to read, to long to read, but they need reading materials in order to do that.

My Project

I am asking for a subscription to "Weekly Reader" and "Time for Kids" for each of my students. These are weekly publications that report on high-interest news, science, and social studies related stories at my students' reading level. These two magazines will enhance their science and social studies content studies. Moreover, the students can take them home every week to build a reading library of their own, in their house, in their room. At the end of the school year each student will have about seventy magazines at home that they can read over and over again. Students today, live in a world of television and video games. They also need to be able to live in a world of print--to read, to write, and to communicate. They need to move out of the virtual world of images and move into a world of print, but they need the print-rich materials to make that move.

Do you love to read?

I do. How did you learn to love to read? By reading. Do you know how to read? I do. How did you learn to read? By practicing reading. In order to do these things, one needs books, things to read--books, magazines, newspapers, materials, etc. Thank you for considering my proposal and helping my students.
