Poetry Making Successful Readers

My students need notebooks to glue poems in and to write and illustrate about the poems, sentence strips to write and sequence poems, and a tote to hold the notebooks.

My Students

Did you know that poetry can help students with many different aspects of reading? Poetry can help with word recognition, word families, and fluency, just to name a few. These are skills that my first graders work on everyday in the classroom and poetry is another way to learn these skills.

My students come from many different backgrounds.

Their homes do not always have books for the students to read or the parents to read to them. Many of our students struggle with reading and we as teachers are always looking for ways to help them become better readers. Because of this, my students need exposure to as many different types of literature as possible. Poetry is a way for these students to gain knowledge of words and language in a fun and effective way.

My Project

Because our community consists of lower incomes, we do not ask for many school supplies to start out each year. I have asked that each child have his/her own composition notebook to act as a "Poetry Notebook." I will present the class with a new poem each week and we will do many different activities with it. We will look for rhyming words, new vocabulary, punctuation, and practice our fluency by reading it everyday. The students can then glue their very own copy of the poem into their poetry notebooks. On the opposite page the students can write what the poem means to them or what it reminds them of. They can also illustrate something to go with the poem. This activity will also include writing skills. After working with the poem, we can write the poem on sentence strips and the students can practice putting the poem back in order. They will then be able to read the poem independently and can practice reading fluently.

My students need one notebook to glue poems in and to write and illustrate about the poems, sentence strips to write and sequence poems, and a tote to hold the notebooks.

This will allow my students to have all the materials they need to open up so many doors of reading. They will have fun reading the poetry and learn literacy skills at the same time. Finally, the skills that the students gain from each poem will hopefully be used in their reading throughout the year and beyond.
