Provide Military Students with High Interest Books

My students need the 39 children's books featured on the 2010-2011 South Carolina Book Award lists to cultivate a love of reading.

My Students

As a school librarian, one of my main objectives is to foster the love of reading in students. Unfortunately, budget cuts have resulted in there being no money for purchasing new books for the library collection. Please help our students have access to current, quality literature to grow as readers.

I am privileged to teach at a public elementary school that serves approximately 475 students in grades PreK-5.

The majority of students attending the school have one parent in the military; these students often find themselves in single parent situations for extended periods of time due to military deployments. The rest of the school’s population consists of choice students – students who have chosen to attend the school because of its high test scores and positive annual report cards from the State Department of Education. Our students enjoy visiting the library on a regular basis to check out books and magazines. Last school year, books from a wide range of genres and subjects were circulated over 26,500 times; this statistic shows the students’ eagerness to explore the world of reading. However, this excitement for reading will wane if the students don’t have access to new books this year.

My Project

The SC Book Award reading program is a school-wide program. Students in grades K-2nd read books on the Picture Book Award list, while 3rd-5th grade students read chapter books on the Children’s Book Award list. Throughout the year, the students read at least 5 of the books and vote for their favorite titles. Each student who reads the entire list receives a title from next year’s list for his home library. Third through 5th grade students complete review forms for each book they read, teaching them to make connections between what they read and their personal experiences. They also create posters persuading others to vote for a particular title. Both lists feature high interest fiction and nonfiction books. The books cover a wide range of subjects that appeal to students; for example, 100 Days and 99 Nights is a book that tells the story of two children who have to deal with a parent being deployed overseas. Many of the titles can also be used by teachers to supplement the curriculum.

This program gets students excited about reading and helps develop an important, lifelong skill.

It also encourages literacy at home. The students will be very excited to read these books after I book talk them. However, due to budget cuts, the library has not been able to purchase the multiple copies needed for every student to participate in this reading program. Your generous donation will ensure that every student who wants to participate in this program will have the opportunity.
