My Students

My favorite question as a teacher is "what does this have to do with my world?" "How will this help me in life?" Students are motivated to learn when they can connect with characters in a book, read and discuss topics that are happening in the world now, and use up to date resources.

My classroom is full of pubescent 11 and 12 year olds who come from all areas of our city.

The majority are from low-income homes. While our school does the best they can serving the needs of its teachers, funds are low. Once the small amount of money allocated for materials such as paper, pencils, and highlighters have run out it is up to teachers to purchase any additional resources.

My Project

I Am the Cheese is a novel students can relate to. Not only can I teach predicting, making text to self/world/text connections, foreshadowing, and other various reading strategies with this book, its descriptive language it models is a way to introduce figurative language and sensory details into students writing. Time for Kids is a way for students to know what is going on in the world while reading! Students will be able to be engaged while learning text features, information writing, and examples of strong leads, facts and statistics, correct citing of sources, and effective conclusions. At the current moment I have about 10 elementary dictionaries that are at least 20 years old. This past year students would go to look up words and 9 times out of 10 the word would not even be in them. While the computer is a great way to look up words, most of them do not have a computer at home and need to know how to manually flip through a dictionary when they are reading and writing.

This project is a request for basic educational needs in our classroom.

I am not asking for anything fancy, just reading materials that will engage and aid in my student's learning.
