Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students desperately need a clean and comfortable place to sit and learn. Without this donation it will be challenging for them to feel comfortable during instructional time. They will be forced to sit on a cold concrete floor. This breaks my heart as they are only 6 and 7 years old.

I teach first grade students in a Title one school(extreme poverty).

At least 86 percent of my students are first generation Americans. Their families struggle daily to find housing and feed their families in an ever changing world where the poor are sometimes forgotten. I often spent over $1,000 from my teachers salary so my students can have the basics such as supplies and snacks. Parents often write me letters telling of their hardships and how difficult it is for them to make ends meet. My students are ambitious and full of promise. They enjoy coming to school as this is the one place they feel they are not judged and given some of the basics that they need.

My Project

I would humbly request a carpet for my students to sit on that is clean and appealing. As a first grade teacher most of my instruction time is spent on the carpet. I had purchased many carpets in the past but find that 28 kids sitting on a carpet can cause extreme wear and tear. I was forced to dispose of my carpet this past June as the edges were fraying and germs had accumulated from a serious outbreak from swine flu in my school. With the purchase of this carpet my students will be comfortable and able to concentrate on their task at hand compared to sitting on a cold bare floor. This carpet also has rhymes on it which will also allow my students who struggle with the English language the opportunity to practice their rhyming skills.

The purchase of this carpet will allow me to purchase with my money the needed supplies my students also need such as crayons, paper and notebooks.

Without this donation school supplies may be limited as I have a smaller budget to work with this year because of cutbacks on school funding. Thank you in advance for taking the time to make a difference in the lives of needy young children.
