Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Put technology in the hands of those that would otherwise not have the opportunity to learn to use these tools.

This upcoming year, I will have about 22 students in a self-contained fourth grade classroom.

Their reading abilities range from second grade reading level to eighth grade levels. Our school is a Title I school. Our demographics are 40% Hispanic, 40% African American, and 20% white. We are a regular public school in a small town in Texas. As with most school districts across the country, ours is struggling with budget shortfalls. Since we are a small rural town, we do not have a large tax base from which to draw funds.

My Project

I've seen digital storytelling projects on other teachers' websites. Students use the Flip camcorder to script, create, and video puppet shows for various classroom topics. They will create personal narrative videos about a person or pet of their choice. They will research and create videos of historical events to share with the class. I can see them using the camcorder for so many more projects. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. Not only will they be learning how to use the camcorder, but the Windows program, Movie Maker, also. Wow, just think, junior movie makers. These projects will incorporate reading, writing, science, social studies research, and public speaking. Cross-curricular!

My students are always eager to try something new.

Technology is huge in our society, but some kids don't get to experience using these devices because of family or school economics. I would like to give them the opportunity to learn how to use these Flip video cameras for digital storytelling projects. Who knows, learning how to create movies might be the start of a career for some of these students. Thank you.
