This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember doing Science experiments in grade school? The students from last year have been raving about the owl pellet lab to our incoming Fourth graders. They know this hands-on learning will be an unforgettable learning experience!

I teach at a low-social economic status arts school in CA, where we emphasize learning through the multiple intelligences, the arts (dance, theater, art, music), dual language, and technology.

All-the-while, we adhere to the CA content standards and teach the core subjects, too. Being a charter school in downtown has its disadvantages in that we don't have district supplies. What parents cannot donate, the teacher pulls out of her own pocket.

My Project

Supporting Scientists as work will give our students a chance to discover insights about an owl's feeding habits and where it fits in a food web. The lab allows students to investigate the type and availability of prey in an area, predator/prey relationships, and even the role of enzymes in digestion with these owl pellets. This lab will enhance our unit study of ecosystems in a fun, exciting way!

Help make it possible for our Fourth graders to experience hands-on Life Science!

When else can a student every experience looking at owl poop, if not in school? More importantly, food chains and food webs explain how organisms survive/become extinct. Students gain a sense of how organisms exist and how they co-exist. They learn knowledge about Life Science that will further enhance their studies of Life Science in high school. These students may be our future Scientists.
