What's a Writer's Notebook Anyway?

My students need a class set of "Writer's Notebook: Unlocking the Writer Within You" to better understand what a writer's notebook is, while also learning how to successfully participate in literature circles.

My Students

What is a writer's notebook? What do you put in a writer's notebook? Do "real" writers use a writer's notebook? These are questions I commonly get when I introduce writer's notebooks to my 4th graders.

The readers and writers in my classroom are hard-working students trying very hard to find their own voice as writers and to begin living the writing life.

Before coming to me, most of them haven't been given the opportunity to keep a writer's notebook or been asked to write about topics that are important to them. Not only do they face the challenge of writing about personal topics, they have to worry about someone outside of their family reading what they write -- this is a scary prospect for anyone, especially fourth graders. My students are a diverse mix of nationalities, experiences, households, and educational backgrounds; however, what they all have in common is a desire to succeed.

My Project

I tell my students that I often have conversations with my friend, Ralph Fletcher. In these conversations I learn how to teach them to be better writers and live the writing life. The students soon figure out that these conversations happen in the pages of his books. Now, I want my students to be able to have these same conversations with Ralph through his book, "A Writer's Notebook." In these conversations they will learn more about how to make a writer's notebook a part of their life. These conversations with Ralph will then turn into grand conversations with each other through literature circles. Imagine students gathering together in groups of three to five and discussing what they are learning and reading -- different activities they'd like to try in their writing life, what they think will help them be better writers, or activities they just think are absurd! Authentic conversations, authentic reading, authentic learning that will stay with them for the rest of their lives!

By donating to this project, students will know from day one how to keep a writer's notebook and how to participate in literature circles, activities they are expected to do the entire year.

This project also helps students understand the connection between reading and writing. More important, your donation will help students find the confidence to write about topics that are personal and important. And maybe you might inspire the next Lois Lowery, Christopher Paul Curtis, or J.K. Rowling.
