My Students

"I need to see it to believe it!" Many of my students have trouble grasping concepts in biology since many of the topics are invisible to the naked eye...until now! A micro-video camera will allow my students to explore scientific phenomena and share it with their classmates.

I am proud to teach some of the brightest and most curious kids that I have ever met.

However, in one of the poorest sections of Washington, DC, our children are largely underprivileged and overlooked. While our school is in a dilapidated state as we await our first renovation since the 1970s, my students still come to school every day: begging for structure and fervently working to better their own lives. As a science teacher, I am privy to observe the innate curiosity and problem-solving abilities of my students. Despite the tremendous obstacles that my students must face on a daily basis, they are still determined to explore and to learn. My students give me hope for the future and they ensure that the American Dream is still very much alive. All students can achieve at the highest levels if given the opportunity.

My Project

A micro-video camera will help turn my biology classroom into a 21st Century lab. Since the advent of microscopes, scientists were able to see the previously invisible, albeit one person at a time. In order to share what they saw, scientists had to reduce their vivid images to mere figures in diagram by hand. Now, however, the scientists in my classroom will be able to share what they see with the whole world, from the comfort of their own seat. Video and images can be broadcast from their microscope to the LCD projector or uploaded onto our class website. Pictures can then be analyzed indefinitely and incorporated into their lab reports or science fair projects. Additionally, the micro-video camera also has the potential to broadcast images of larger objects, such as students' work. We can analyze a students Punnett Square without rewriting it onto the board, but actually by broadcasting the student's paper and work through it as a class!

As simple as it seems, this micro-video camera will put my students in the driver's seat of their own learning.

Instead of simply showing my class pictures of microscope slides and explaining each detail, my students will be able to inquire and explore for themselves and present their own, authentic findings. This type of learning will give my students the opportunity to engage in real scientific inquiry.
