Comparative Politics and the U.S. Constitution

My students need a class set of (40) U.S. Constitution reference books and a DVR in order to view videos related to the subject of Comparative Politics.

My Students

There's nothing more important for a student than to have a teacher who has access to resources necessary to make learning exciting, fun and meaningful. I have the challenge of teaching a class for which I have no text books or materials. Great lessons can be accomplished with these materials.

I have the privilege of teaching in an innovative high school in a large urban school district in the state of Ohio.

Our students are all academically accomplished. They entered our program through an application and interview process, and each scholar must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Our students comprise a diversity of ethnicities and backgrounds, and they come to us across the city and suburbs. One adjective that describes our students' abilities is resilience. They are determined to succeed despite the odds. In addition, our school has received an Excellent rating on the state report card for the OGT for the past four years of our school's existence.

My Project

The subject that I will teach, "Comparative Politics," falls under the Social Studies curriculum and requires students to examine politics from two perspectives: conservative and liberal. Students will also closely examine these political perspectives in relation to the U.S. Constitution and its amendments. Students will evaluate what they believe were the framers' intentions as they were drafting the document. And they will analyze the impact of the Constitution and amendments in relation to today's political realities. In this class students will be required to examine various Supreme Court courses to determine how a conservative court's rulings might compare to a liberal court's rulings. Students will reference the Constitution in their analysis of the issues under study. Students should be able to gain a better understanding of the logic that drives today's political systems. The DVR is a needed resource to provide students' immediate access to related media which they can analyze.

This project will increase students' critical and analytical thinking skills which are crucial twenty-first century real world skills.

Becoming a more effective thinker and problem solver will improve students' abilities in other subject areas as well. In addition, this project will help students gain a better understanding of the political realities of today's world.
