Second Annual Empty Bowl Dinner

My students need clay, glaze and dipping tools for the benefit dinner project we do annually to raise money and awareness for hunger in our area.

My Students

We have all seen the "homeless and hungry" signs in the hands of some sad soul on the side of the road and wondered what we can do to help. Well this project opens up an opportunity for my students to make a difference for the hungry people in our community, and for most, in their own neighborhoods.

Both of the schools I work with have VERY high percentages of students suffering from poverty.

Yet they are the most amazing, giving, caring kids I have ever seen. We have very few classes to take other than the core subjects yet they don't complain. They already know how to make the most of what they have because life has taught them that. They don't come from families that teach the standard moral fiber things that were taught when I was a kid but they are eager to learn them anyway. This project gives me a chance to show they nothing can stop them if they try. They have to learn how to ask for help and that it isn't a sign of weakness to do so. They also need to see that people care enough to help when they do ask.

My Project

This project helps my students achieve a sense of pride in a way I didn't anticipate. I did this last year and we raised over $800 in donations for the local soup kitchen. The way the project works is the students spend the year making ceramic bowls in all the possible ways they can. Then they glaze them and decorate them. In May we have a huge dinner that guests pay $10 to attend. Each guest gets a full meal(all food is also donated) and a ceramic bowl to symbolize their donation helped to fill a bowl for someone else. The students also work the dinner, serving food, providing entertainment, and some even choose to make a speech about the dinners purpose and its meaning to them.

I believe this project is important because it teaches my students that what they do with their life is up to them not the circumstances they live in.

It teaches them that if you put your mind to it and have a worthy cause that people will help you make things happen. It also teaches them the value of compassion which is a lesson I feel is all to often forgotten in the world today. I hope you will give them a chance to have a second annual empty bowl project dinner. Thank you for your time.
