My Students

Did you ever feel that because of you are or where you are from that you would never have the opportunity to be successful?

I teach eighth grade language arts in a rural town in North Carolina.

Many of my students come from families who struggle with acquiring the basic necessities of life. Yet, our school has strong parental and community support. Even in the face of challenges and adversity, our students strive to be successful.

My Project

October Sky will resonate strongly with the students in my classroom. The challenges and conflicts faced by Homer Hickman and his friends will correspond to current challenges and conflicts faced by my students today. When teaching we are told to make our content relevant and true to life. I know of no other story that can better fulfill those requirements for my students.

With your help I can supply my students with reading material that will demonstrate to them that no matter where you are from or who you are you can be successful.
