My Students

Homework is a vital component of academic success. Unfortunately, many of my students lack the materials necessary for their homework. We need backpacks so that my students can take home leveled books, writing journals, and other school supplies to help them practice their skills at home.

I teach special education at a low-income school.

All of my students have either learning disabilities or mild mental disabilities. They come from low income homes and often have very little parental involvement. Because my students struggle with retaining their academic skills, homework is a vital part of their academic success. They need that extra daily practice, and often their home life does not provide the support needed for that practice.

My Project

My wish is to provide take-home backpacks to my students filled with leveled books, writing journals, and basic school supplies. By providing these supplies, my students will be able to complete their homework and practice their reading and writing skills with their families. This is the first step in bridging the home to school gap that currently exists in our school. Providing the backpacks will also give students the materials they need to practice their skills at home, which will encourage the retention of their basic academic skills.

My students deserve every opportunity to succeed.

Unfortunately, their home lives do not currently set them up for success. By providing these backpacks to bridge the home-school gap, perhaps my students and their families will come together in support of learning.
