Reading Remediation for Graduation

My students need a variety of texts, strategies, and activities to become successful readers.

My Students

Can you imagine what it would be like to be a senior in high school and not know if you were going to graduate? Can you imagine not being able to experience the richness of the world available within the pages of a book because you lack the skills to comprehend what you are reading?

I would label my targeted students either "fake readers" or "reluctant readers".

They have made it to high school without having the necessary skills to be successful in school because they do not read on grade level. They believe that word calling is reading. They lack the background knowledge to understand the intricate cognitive skills needed to comprehend what they read. These students are often belligerent on the first days of school, because they don't want anyone to know that they are not successful readers. They often cover their lack of skills by being disruptive in the classroom, being truant, or worse, by eventually dropping out of school. My students have the same hopes and dreams of their reading peers, but the door to a successful future may be shut to them because they don't pass the graduation exam.

My Project

My goal is to teach each and every one of my students the skills necessary to pass the Reading section of the graduation exam. I intend to use the additional resources that I am requesting, along with existing resources, and my expertise as a Reading Specialist, to enhance reading lessons with a variety of strategies and activities. The additional resources provided by my donors will enhance lessons that will be engaging and meet the needs of all learning styles.

Success in my classroom will lead to graduation for these students, increased self-esteem, increased opportunities, and ultimately a lifelong love for learning and reading which will enhance our community and society.
