In this ever changing and technological world our students deserve an education that includes this technology. The GPS units paired with a mapping software program will allow my students to use up-to-date technology while collecting their data to support their hypothesis.
The students in my classes are amazing students.
Their families have chosen our school over many other schools in the area due to our style of teaching. We are an Expeditionary Learning school with small class sizes and a hands-on project-based approach to teaching. Some of the families have chosen our school because their students are looking for a challenge and we can provide the differentiated instruction to ensure they are being challenged. Other families have chosen our school because of the small class sizes and the hands-on learning that has helped students that may struggle in a more traditional class room setting. During each expedition (semester) the students will grapple with learning material that is useful in their lives and applies to our area. The expedition will culminate with a product that has an authentic audience.
My Project
Our students will be working as scientists in the field creating a hypothesis about how a unique geological area was created. The students will collect multiple pieces of evidence to support their hypothesis. The GPS unit will allow the students to use technology that many of them will encounter in their future careers. It will help them organize their data for the presentations. The students will also be able to use the coordinates to map the areas on programs such as google earth and geological programs. These aerial programs will give the students a different perspective on their site. This will be a great way for me to provide an additional challenge for those students that thrive on the additional challenge. The sky is the limit and my students will amaze you at what they will accomplish with just a few additional resources.
The use of technology in our world today is inevitable.
Students deserve a chance to practice with technology in real world situations at every chance we can provide them. The GPS will allow our students to collect evidence like a real scientist would.
