My Students

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire," said William Butler Yeats. Please help ignite & strengthen the minds of my 28-second graders by supplementing the regular curriculum with a more interactive technologically advanced classroom. The goal: Raise Student Achievement.

We are located in a culturally diverse & lower-income neighborhood, & are always striving to meet & exceed the California state standards.

Once again this year we are facing difficult times financially for public education. Class sizes are dramatically increasing this year in my district from a 20:1 to 28:1 ratio. The district has eliminated three instructional days from the school year, all of our parent teacher conference days, & one staff development day. Elementary prep times to aid in planning & preparing lessons have been reduced by 50%. Teacher salaries will be based on the 2007/2008-salary schedule with an additional reduction of 3.21%. Despite these challenges that we are being faced with, remaining committed to my students is my ultimate goal. All of my students will receive a quality education that will allow each & every one to reach their fullest potential.

My Project

With this new technology tool, the netbook, my students would be able to remain comfortably in their seats and be able to utilize the online resources as a whole class. One resource that would be employed is Curriculum Companion that is directly aligned to the activities & lessons found in our textbooks. It contains thematic PowerPoint presentations to open up each unit in order to activate prior knowledge & build background information using visuals & discussion prompts. Graphic organizers are available to introduce & reinforce vocabulary concepts, to strengthen reading comprehension skills, to support differentiating instruction activities for English language learners, intervention, & challenge students, & to support different writing genres & steps in the writing process. Relevant & appropriate website links and video clips are also identified for each of the units and lessons.

The power that the netbook and projector will bring when they are working together will open up a whole new world to my students. These technology tools will greatly advance their classroom experience. It will enrich, enhance, support the standards, create life-long learners, raise student achievement, & integrate across the curriculum. An advanced interactive classroom is here to incorporate into my daily lessons.
