My Students

"And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt." This quote is from late poet Sylvia Plath. My dream is for students to fully realize what she means.

I teach high school English at a school that is considered to be in a critical needs area in South Carolina.

I teach freshmen who come from all different kinds of backgrounds, which makes my classroom a neat place to be. I feel like I am always learning new things about them! This upcoming school year, I will be working with students who have been identified as being academically at-risk. I am so excited to be working with them because I feel that we have so much to learn from each other. These students need to know that there are people cheering for them and who believe in them. I want to do all I can this school year to help them be the best that they can be and to show them that they can be successful with just a little bit of determination and self-confidence.

My Project

Many students are reluctant writers. They get extremely anxious when a paper is assigned, and they don't really know where to start. I want to focus on two things this year that will hopefully prove to be a big help to them: Journaling and vocabulary practice. With the spiral notebooks and pens, I want to get my students in the habit of journaling. Some days they will have assigned topics, but for the most part, they will be writing about whatever is on their heart or in their head. Journaling everyday will get them used to the idea of writing, and they will also be able to read back through their journal for years to come and relive some memories. The index cards, rings, and highlighters are to help my students improve vocabulary skills. If they have a large arsenal of vocabulary words to choose from, it will help them become more confident writers. The index cards will contain definitions, pictures, and other devices to help students learn and remember their vocabulary words.

Your donation to this project will help 30 students believe in themselves, despite the fact that they have been labeled as "at-risk".

By journaling and improving their vocabulary, these students will realize that they can be successful not only in my class, but in future classes. Writing is something we have to do, no matter what walk of life we find ourselves in. I know that this project sounds simple, but I truly believe that if these students realize they can do it, I know they will go far!
