Phonics through Music

My students need a speaker system in order to sing along with the phonics songs on the mp3 player we have in the speech therapy classroom.

My Students

How can students learn phonics? My students use a program called Lively Letters that teaches letter/sound associations using speech therapy methods. Each sound is taught with a story and a song that showcases the proper placement of the tongue and lips to help the student rapidly recall the sound.

I use this program in my speech classroom with students who have speech and language disorders.

I also use this program in all kindergarten and 1st grade classes in order to make all student's first experiences with letters and spelling patterns positive and memorable. The students love the music component and are easily motivated by the stories in the program.

My Project

Results from individual pre-and post testing indicates substantial gain in letter-sound recognition for each student. Students are unable to learn to read unless letter-sound identification skills are automatic. Phonics are taught in a unique manner where letters become characters that have a story. Each character has a song that reinforces the strategies for production. We need a speaker/dock system to plug our mp3 player into so the students can sing along with the phonics songs.

Lively Letters phonics program is a multi-sensory phonics program teaching students rapid recall of sounds and letters through music and movement.

It was created by a speech therapist for all students needing these pre-reading skills.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
