Got My Toes in the Sand

My students need student safe plastic test tubes to allow easier viewing of beach sands from around the world.

My Students

Have you ever wondered if all beach sands are the same? Growing up in Florida on the gulf coast, I thought all beaches had white sand and shells. Boy was I surprised when I visited beaches on Florida's east coast. I was even more surprised in Massachusetts to find a rocky beach!

Now, I live and teach in NE Georgia.

In Florida, it was not a big deal to take a field trip to the coast to study beach formation, weathering, and erosion. Now the beach is too far away. Many of my students have never even been to the beach! But, no need to go to the beach, I have a collection of sand from many beaches around the United States. I even have sand from beaches around the world, thanks to students and friends who travel and bring me a bottle of sand! This sand is used to teach lessons on weathering and erosion. The students use microscopes to observe the sand and compare the different materials the beach sand is made of.

My Project

All this sand is stored in plastic water bottles and it is taking up too much space in the classroom. Using the student safe test tubes will be a perfect way to store the sand. The test tubes are a great size to store enough sand for the students to observe. Since the test tubes are plastic, I don't have to worry about a student dropping and breaking the test tube. The test tube racks will allow for even easier observations.

You can help my students experience a little piece of the beach and learn about weathering and erosion at the same time!
