My Students

Imagine what fun it would be to retell a story using a puppet stage and real puppets. My students squat down behind a desk and use the sock puppets I made for them. They enjoy using the puppets, but think of the fun they would have pulling back the curtain on stage and using real puppets.

I teach kindergarten in a rural public school.

Our school has a high poverty rate. Most of my students do not have books in their homes. They love to listen to stories. They also enjoy retelling stories and acting them out. They are enthusiastic about learning. They are bright and energetic. I want to keep them excited about learning by providing them a variety of resources.

My Project

I have literacy stations in my classroom. The students are divided into groups of 3 or 4 students of varying abilities. During station time students do various activities such as; reading, journal writing, ABC work, listening to books on tape, illustrating poems, reading big books, acting out stories, retelling stories using props and flannel boards, along with many other types of literacy work. Before beginning, I will read the stories that have puppets or flannel board pieces to the children several times so that the children become familiar with them. The students can match the puppets or flannel board pieces to the characters in their corresponding book. Then the students can act out the stories using the puppets. Retelling or acting out stories improves reading comprehension and encourages creative expression. The puppet stage can be used for dramatic play activities such as a store or a flower shop. The possibilities are endless!

I want my students to love reading.

Exposing them to good literature is one aspect of building a love for books. Using puppets brings stories to life. Retelling stories increases comprehension and helps build fluency. Thank you for helping me promote a love for reading in my students. I cannot thank you enough.
