My students need 26 Social Studies and Science trade books for use in our classroom studies to help them understand the topics in an age-appropriate way.

My Students

Science and Social Studies are such important parts of a Kindergarten curriculum! Young students need to have these subjects introduced to them in age-appropriate ways, which can be accomplished with the use of children's literature and trade books.

Our school is located in a semi-rural, high-poverty district.

Many of our students come from low-income homes. Some students do not have books in their homes at all, let along books that explain important science and social studies topics in child-friendly language. My students are eager to learn and soak up the information presented to them in books. They love to listen to stories, so presenting science and social studies to them this way helps them understand the information.

My Project

Our curriculum includes several social studies and science topics throughout the year. Some of these include manners, hygiene and germs, safety, community helpers, American symbols, patriotism, presidents, plants, and animals. Young children have short attention spans, so it is up to teachers to find interesting ways to present these topics. I love using trade books and children's literature with my students! They love the colorful pictures and the accompanying stories are an age-appropriate way to help them understand the important social studies and science topics. These books will become an integral part of our classroom library and will enable my students to learn in a fun and engaging way.
