My Students

Do you remember reading classroom books during your independent reading time? My students have a wide variety of books to read but nowhere to sit and read away from their desks. I want my students to be very comfortable when they are reading and to be able to listen to themselves read.

My students are first graders in a high poverty school.

They are enthusiastic about learning and love to read. This year we will be housed in a portable. I am hoping to make our new classroom setting inviting, comfortable, and personable. One advantage to being in a portable is that there are fewer noise distractions.

My Project

Having a comfortable spot for my students to read will allow them to focus on their reading and provide the students with a quiet, cozy spot to listen to themselves read. The cushions I have chosen are durable and washable. The students will be able to choose a cushion to take anywhere in the classroom during their reading center time. Listening Phones or Whisper Phones are plastic, phone-like devices that magnifies the student's voice so they can hear themselves as they speak into it. This allows them to focus on how they sound when they are reading. It will improve their phonic skills, reading, fluency, and speech. The students will be able to keep the phones at their desks and use them during their reading center or at anytime they are reading.

This project is important to me because reading is a main focus at my school.

I want the children to be excited about reading and learning to read. With your help I can make a comfortable spot for students to read in my classroom with the cushions and listen to themselves read with the phones. Please help me give my 1st grade students this opportunity to develop all the skills they need to be successful readers.
