My Students

To understand electricity well students need to see and interact with examples of it. The classic Van De Graff generator - the big "ball" of electricity that makes hair stand on end - is a fabulous way to interest students in the study of electricity.

The students in my physics class come from a variety of backgrounds.

We are a diverse community in Northern California. The students are hardworking young people who learn science better from hands-on, interactive activities. Their eyes light up during a good demonstration and their minds are completely focused when they have relevant, interesting curriculum.

My Project

The Van De Graff Generator is a way to utilize students' excitement for demonstrations but also to teach fundamental concepts in electricity that students can apply later to applications when they build circuits and simple motors. We can show the students the concepts of charge transfer, positive and negative charges and their attraction and repulsion, principle of conduction and induction. These concepts will be learned through creative and eye-catching experiments such as the classic "hair-raiser", bringing a fluorescent tube close in a "Darth Vader" style demon, and having conductive objects transfer charge to and from the generator.

This demonstration equipment is essential in a high school physics classroom.

It gives students an excellent understanding of basic electricity principles. It can be used for years to come by many students at the school.
