Stay Current with Time for Kids

My students need a classroom subscription so each will have his or her own individual copies of the amazing magazine Time for Kids.

My Students

Have you heard of Afghanistan? Or the earthquake in Haiti? Or maybe how there are types of elephants becoming endangered? Obviously, as adults, we are aware of these current events. However, the reality is that kids do not necessarily have the same awareness of what is going on in the world.

My students are willing and excited to learn.

They are a sixth grade class of multi-ability learners. I have GATE students, RSP students, SDC students, and over half the class does not speak English as their primary language. Our community in CA is diverse, but socio-economically disadvantaged to some extent. My students come to school with a variety of challenging family situations. Most of my students have not had opportunities to visit outside our community, and will thrive with the chance to be educated about the rest of the world. We are a Title One Award Winning school, and my students want to improve themselves academically, and as part of our community.

My Project

Time for Kids is an amazing magazine. It has an incredible readability so that students of different reading levels will be drawn in to the interesting articles and stimulating pictures. While improving non-fiction reading comprehension, my students will also be learning about what is going on in the world. They will be becoming educated, global citizens who, in turn, can make an impact themselves. They will be developing good reading strategies like recognizing new vocabulary, and working on questioning and summarizing. This is a great way to make sure my students are actively engaged in current events. It is also a way to jump start higher-level discussion.

A class subscription to Time for Kids will leave a lasting impact on my sixth graders.

I feel confident that this is a powerful way to stimulate interest in global events. I am excited to be able to offer them this magazine, and I am very appreciative of your support. After all, we are educating students to someday be leaders, and what better way to do that than to make sure they are passionately aware of what is happening not only in their community, but also around the world!
