Reading For Our Own Good and To Our Peers At St. Jude!

My students need children's books to read for accelerated reading and through Skype to children at St. Jude Hospital.

My Students

I am a 3rd grade teacher with an upcoming class of thirty precious children. It is dis-heartening to see children of this age who know more about video games and texting on cell phones than the pure joy and adventure in reading a great children's book. Please help me to help them go on an adventure

I teach thirty precious children in Metropolis, IL.

We are a public K-6 in a rural community. Although my students come from different types of backgrounds; financial, cultural, racial, etc...they all have the same thing in common; Innocence. They are such good students who love to be challenged and learn. But their innocence is slowly being taken from them with today's technology. They know more about video games, facebook, and texting on cell phones than the pure joy and adventure found in a child's book.

My Project

By your generous donation, I will be able to update my "Reading Island". It is a corner of my classroom completely dedicated to children's books. Due to budget constraints the majority of the books in my classroom have come from my own collection from my youth. I Love children's books and want to share that love and encourage my students and future students to do the same. An addition of new and more up to date books will help tremendously. Once the books are in place the students will be participating in Accelerated Reading and our own project which will be to read to children at St. Jude Hospital. Our students are active yearly in fundraising for the hospital but I want to do something different as well. With our new books I will set aside different times each week and coordinate with St. Jude's so that we can connect online through Skype and let my students read their stories to peers of their age in the hospital at St. Jude's. Allowing them to take adventures together; reading

Anytime a student picks up a book instead of turning on a game, cell phone, or computer, it is a victory to their minds.

By reading their new books to children at St. Jude's, they will not only be enriching their own minds, but the hearts and minds of their peers in the hospital. And hopefully gaining the value of volunteering their time to worthy causes.
