Fun with Classic Literature: Medea!

My students need a class set of the drama "Medea" by Euripedes.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember that story in high school that just clicked, just resonated, just engaged you like no other book before had? That feeling is what I want to provide my students, and based on their positive reaction to "The Odyssey," I think Medea would be another great hit!

Dallas ISD is one of the largest districts in the nation and it is appalling how easily the students can fall through the cracks, another number in the staggering statistics about dropout rates.

However, after one year at A. Maceo Smith High School, I am confident that such a cycle can be broken. My students, albeit years behind in reading and writing skills, made huge leaps this year in their growth and demonstrated interest in texts that I never expected. Many of them remembered the tiniest facts from "The Odyssey" and fought over playing parts in "Romeo and Juliet." They were transforming. But the job is not finished yet. A lot of work remains to be done in order to prepare them for college and careers, but fortunately I have the amazing opportunity to continue with my students into 10th grade; I cannot wait to keep pushing them forward!

My Project

With such a riveting text like "Medea," I know my students will be engaged. They already showed major interest in the Greek gods, goddesses, and heroes; thus, I am convinced they will be hooked by the story of scorned woman and the extreme lengths she goes to regain her dignity. Using a high-interest text like this will make it that much easier to push the students' reading skills to a higher level. I cannot wait to involve them in debate-style discussions about the characters' actions, motivations, and choices. I anticipate using the drama as a means to include staging, acting, and rewriting parts of the play in modern versions. The opportunities are endless!

Without a doubt, your donation will make a lasting impact on my students.

They will blown away first of all that someone cares enough to provide them with new texts. To know that their education is important to others, immediately inspires them. Additionally, they will be thrilled to work with a text that is of interest to them. When students are interested in what they read, they naturally strive harder to increase those reading/writing skills that are so necessary for their future success
