My Students

"I request the opportunity to challenge the veracity of the opposing counsel's rebuttal." This is the kind of sentence I dream of hearing uttered by my ninth-grade students, many of whom enter my classroom reading at or below the fourth-grade level.

My students come from a variety of middle schools, but most of the schools have one thing in common -- they are located in low-income neighborhoods and struggle to teach basic literacy skills.

When those students enter my classroom, it is because they applied specifically to study law and legal issues. They are often interested in law because of what they have seen on television: "Law & Order," "CSI," and "Forensic Files." What they don't predict is that their work in the Law Program will be invaluable in helping them to develop stronger literacy skills, a better understanding of history, and a more compassionate view of the modern world. Our school does not offer a wide variety of electives, so I consider it part of my job as the coordinator of the Law Program to make these classes as engaging and valuable for the kids as possible.

My Project

Part of what motivates students to enroll in an in-depth, four-year study of law, government, and civics is the opportunity to "sound smart". My students light up at the chance to learn and use Latin words and technical terms like "adjudicate" "mens rea" and "nexus of control." I want them to have a strong grasp of the vocabulary, and to be confident in their use of each new word and phrase. In the process, they learn Greek and Latin roots that help them with new words in all subject areas. Last year, my classes made illustrated vocabulary pages, where students broke down a new word or phrase, wrote a sample sentence, and created an illustration. This year, I would like them to be able to create illuminated vocabulary cards that they can store in their course scrapbooks. The photo sleeves (holders) will allow them to organize and store these illuminated cards, and easily access individual or groups of cards for use during class or study at home.

Your donations will help my students build their legal vocabulary, but funding this project will also have a significant impact on my kids' performance across subject areas.

Most of the vocabulary my students learn in all classes comes from Latin and Greek, and the system of study we use in the Law Program is easily applied to other subjects. Illustrating the cards gives the kids a creative outlet in a school with no visual arts program, and photo-pockets encourage organization and review.
