Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading and writing are the basic foundations to all academic success. My first graders need support in order to strengthen their foundations.

Our school is located in an under served neighborhood.

The student body is largely Hispanic and many of the children come from homes where English is not the dominant language. We have classes comprised largely of English language learners and students whose second language is English. Despite the obstacle of grappling with a new language, these children are eager to learn and love school.

My Project

My students tend to be visual learners. The vibrant print in the reading and writing journals will help the language come alive for them, and certainly motivate them to read and write more. The reading journals will give the students a special place to record information about books they have read. The word journals and writing prompt journals will inspire storytelling and art.

My goal is to develop a classroom of secure readers and writers.

These tools will certainly assist in that process. Together we can help these children adapt to a language not common in their homes, while at the same time giving them the support they need to to feel confident as they grow as learners.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
