My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you stepped onto the field? How nervous you were to finally put to the test your "mad" skills you learned at practice? I want my athletes to have the ability to compete and practice with new pinnies or scrimmage vests.

I currently work with students, grades 7 and 8 (approximately 70% free and reduced lunch eligible), in a small rural community in northern Maine.

I also coach middle school athletes, grades 6 through 8, in soccer and basketball. State and federal funding cover limited program offerings for students in our local community. Funding for supplies is kept at a very basic level. Although outdoor activities are abundant in rural Maine, proper instruction, and basic fundamentals for competing in soccer and basketball are considered above and beyond the core curriculum.

My Project

Our students love to compete, and I want to improve their chances for success as they mature by having scrimmage vests or pinnies available to them during practice. Athletes will have the ability to play small sided games in soccer, 1 v 1 through 7 v 7, as well as in basketball 2 v 1 and 3 v 2. The pinnies will enable them to recognize who they are competing against and who they are working with on a team. These vests will also be used during games.

Although Title-IX provides for equal opportunity among both girls and boys in athletics, often girls do not have available to them the same quality of equipment as do male athletic teams.

Although I will be using these vests specifically with girls teams, multiple teams will benefit from the use of these vests, as I coach both soccer and basketball throughout the year.
