I am committed to linking science to reading in ways that matter. My students are excited about conducting science investigations. The problem is that many of them do not share the same love for reading.
I work closely with fifth graders who will take a standardized science test at the end of the school year.
They are excited about science and enthusiastically participate in hands-on science activities. Almost 80% of my students at my school are economically disadvantaged and more than 40% of the fifth grade class of 2011 will enter fifth grade reading below grade level.
My Project
I will never abandon the strategy of sparking students excitement about science by involving students in hands-on science activities. At the same time, I recognize that in order for my students to reach their highest potential, they must, at minimum, be proficient readers. I would like to purchase sets of aerial view of geology texts. When classes meet with me for remediation, I will use these selections to engage students in science activities that invite students to inquiry. Students will explore the texts in small cooperative groups and then share how texts deepen their knowledge of landforms, as well as, raise new questions about how the Earth is shaped.
Please help me invite students to inquiry in meaningful ways.
My students must understand that reading about science can be exciting and productive. With your help, my students will be excited and engaged in reading about science. Together we can help my students succeed by flying above the Earth, observing how the Earth is shaped and using these reading experiences to get excited about finding the answers to their questions about how the Earth is shaped.
