Current Science Magazines

My students need 105 copies of Current Science Magazine so each student can use their own copy during class to highlight the current findings in science.

My Students

Do you remember getting excited over the weekly news magazine when you were young? I want my students to experience that same excitement - while learning about current science applications and research. Who knows, these may lead them to inventing sustainable fuels or cures for diseases.

We only have 10 classrooms for our 10 grades (K4-8) and the middle school students have the same three teachers for all three years, so we are very nurturing and family-like.

Our school is a high-achieving school in a school district that, as a whole, is labeled as a District In Need of Improvement at the federal level. Since our students feel safe in our family atmosphere, we are able to help our students develop into young adults ready and eager for high school and college. Through arts integration in all subject areas, our students develop the ability to express their individuality in a positive and productive manner. Since our district is labeled as a District In Need of Improvement, money has to be spent on tests, test taking practice, more math practice, and more reading. Science has been left out. We do not have enough copies of our nine-year-old science textbooks, and no money for supplies because of the budget restrictions. This hinders the students' progress in science.

My Project

My students love science. By reading the Bi-Monthly Current Science Magazine, my students will be able to learn about the importance of science in the outside world. Their interest will continue to grow as our curriculum gets into more complicated topics because they will see what they can do with their skills. Since we have such out-dated textbooks, the magazines are the way for the students to learn about the exciting parts of science and careers that didn't even exist ten years ago. My students want to learn about inventions that could lead to a cleaner environment, cars that can run on hydrogen, and why steroids are so dangerous. They need to be able to compete with children from the United States and around the world. These magazines will help level the playing field. Unfortunately, the subscription cost is too high for most of my students’ families, so without this grant, we could be bottling scientific talent so necessary for the U.S. to compete with the rest of the world.

You will make it possible for my students to develop their future careers.

When my students read about inventions, ideas churn in their heads. The creative minds that my young critical thinkers have might just be the minds that come up with a cure for HIV/AIDS, cancer, or genetic diseases. If you can help my students stay hooked on science through their middle school years, I can only imagine a promising future for all of us.
