However, it is difficult for students to understand the differences between the types of rocks when we are limited by the rocks we find and bring in. Having actual identified samples of each type of rock would do so much to help them understand! My school sits between two housing projects in an inner-city Ohio neighborhood. Nearly 100% of our students are on free lunch. Few get opportunities to explore the outdoors because the neighborhood is too dangerous to play outside. It is my job to help 5th and 6th graders understand the science of the world around them by bringing that world into my classroom. My Project: Both 5th and 6th graders must study and understand the rock cycle and the characteristics of different types of rocks. However, with only $100 to buy supplies with each year, I am unable to provide much in the way of actual science materials. Having sets of each type of rock would do so much to make an abstract concept come alive. While my students and I can bring rocks we find into the classroom, we are obviously limited by geography. Having scientific samples of each type of rock would truly help my students visualize the differences. It would turn a difficult, abstract concept into a concrete experience. hide» My students need 2 sample sets of Igneous, Metamorphic and Sedimentary rocks. details»
