This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I write and I understand." Chinese Proverb Most of the students in my classroom are second-language learners, and so they have a good deal of trouble feeling comfortable writing, even when they're confident in their speech.

I am so lucky to always have the most wonderful students in my second-grade classroom.

They are caring, hardworking, and curious children who love to learn and express themselves. Their parents may not have much money, but they support and work with their children to the best of their ability. Unfortunately, it's hard for them to buy the supplies their children need, especially in these hard economic times.

My Project

The composition books are for the children's Writing Idea Journals. Into it goes all of their wonderful ideas: thoughts of things they love, hate, are afraid of, imagine, their wishes, and anything that could be a potential writing idea. It contains words and drawings and symbols and thoughts. This idea book is a constant companion and can be referred to anytime they need to remember their good thoughts or add to them. The markers and colored pencils are vital, because young children express themselves not only through their words but with bright and vibrant colors.

To help second-language learners become more secure, confident, and adept at the English language, writing is essential to their development.

Many times they may be learning to speak the language fairly well, but it's quite another to be able to express themselves effectively through words. For young children, writing needs artwork to illustrate their stories, "book" covers, title pages, dedication and publishing pages.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
