Doing Double TIME 4 Kids: Reading, Social Studies, and More

My students need 30 subscriptions to "TIME for Kids" with "Around the World," an engaging way to practice and reinforce non-fiction reading skills while learning about current events, geography, and other cultures around the world.

My Students

Do you remember reading REALLY interesting, kid-friendly, non-fiction material when you were in 4th grade? Hopefully you do, but I don't. While most of the reading we do in our adult lives is non-fiction, students almost always find fiction more engaging because it is targeted to their interests.

I teach at a public school in Washington state.

We are a small district with 4 sections of each grade level. I am a looping teacher, teaching grades 3 and 4. We have adopted a 'Walk to Read' model. Students have 45 minutes of reading instruction in their homerooms, then later in the day they go to different classrooms based on their abilities and needs. This enables us to work with students more or less, as necessary, in the areas of phonetic/phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. The students in my reading class have been identified as highly capable readers. They have mastered the mechanics of reading and are working on higher level phonics, vocabulary, and spelling. They read fluently and many of them comprehend text several years above their grade level.

My Project

Our current reading curriculum has mostly fiction stories with short non-fiction links. I hope to incorporate non-fiction reading through TIME For Kids and Around the World. TIME For Kids is a weekly classroom news magazine that motivates kids to read. Issues cover a wide range of real-world topics kids love to learn about and it's packed with non-fiction selections written FOR kids. A powerful teaching tool, TIME For Kids builds reading and writing skills and is easily integrated across the curriculum, including social studies, science and math. Since its founding in 1995, TIME For Kids has been one of the most authoritative and informative guides for kids as to what is happening in the worlds of health and science, politics, business, society and entertainment. Through Around the World, students will read about and celebrate the culture, people, landmarks and geography of places around the world through photographs, maps, diagrams, charts, folktales, language and activities.

A classroom subscription to TIME For Kids with Around the World would allow my students to engage in real life, non-fiction reading in all topics and subjects.

They would learn how to use important text features, gain vocabulary, build awareness of current issues, and develop an appreciation of cultures around the world. My high ability readers could challenge themselves further by accessing the online activities accompanying each magazine, and further investigating stories that interest them.
