My Students

What is your safe haven from the world? For the 20 four-year-old girls I spend my day with it is our classroom. Poor nutrition, single parents, limited vocabulary exposure, high crime neighborhoods, and poverty are a few of the challenges facing my students every day.

I teach at an urban all girls charter school; the first and only all girls charter school in the area.

Despite coming from the roughest community in the area, these girls are filled with love. They love their teachers, their fellow scholars, and being at school. The school is in its second year and building up its resources little by little. Many of these girls are rarely read to, but frequently babysat by their televisions. The combination disservices their attention spans, their vocabulary, and their ability to think creatively. They attend a school designed to fit their needs and help them reach their full potential. Knowing these girls backgrounds and what they are up against, we have an extended day, an extended year, and hold school one Saturday a month. The rigorous schedule compensates for background but presents a new challenge: student burnout and attention span.

My Project

“The books that help you the most are those which make you think the most”-Theodore Parker I am requesting a collection of Chris Van Allsburg books for my class of 20 four year old girls. Access to good read aloud books is an essential part of the early childhood classroom. Van Allsburg is the premier children’s author on books that elicit critical thinking skills, such as inference and prediction, which aid students not only in developing literacy skills but in various subject areas such as math and science. Van Allsburg's strong text combined with his amazingly detailed illustrations serve as a model and inspiration for our own classroom writing and drawing. This collection of books will be used in read aloud, in writing and in our classroom library. In these settings, my girls will practice critical thinking skills, re-telling, drawing and fine motor development, and help my girls take learning home with them through our own classroom library system.

This project is important because it helps my girls develop a love of literature from an early age.

Reading is unfortunately something that doesn’t happen as often as it should in their homes. By introducing my girls to phenomenal, imaginative stories at school, they will carry that love of reading from school back to their homes. Thank you so much for your generous support of my girls.
