Give Me Five - Growing through Service Learning

My students need a classroom set, 24 books, of The Freedom Writer Diary and the Teacher's Guide so we can read and discuss as we plan a Mix It Up day for our campus.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can our class change the perceptions of others? We have chosen to plan and execute a Mix it Up day beginning with the reading of The Freedom Writers Diary. By celebrating the differences of others we hope to create a school culture of support for the diversity of all students.

Our campus is a diverse group of students representing many cultures.

Surrounded by a low socio-economic neighborhood with a new school campus this would instill pride in our school. Although there is a strong support of education many of the parents days are consumed by work to support their families. Service learning by supporting others would expose my students to other community needs, develop relationships with community leaders and increase their discussions of college and career choices.

My Project

We need a classroom set, 24 books, of The Freedom Writer Diary and the Teacher's Guide so we can read and discuss as we plan a Mix It Up day for our campus. The Freedom Writers Diary read and discussed as a class would introduce the students to diversity, prejudice, unity, community pride and opening the discussion of many to attending college. These discussions combined with a field trip to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles will be used to address issues our own campus and community with its own diversity. Although the books are being used as a springboard to other events alone they connect with the students. The diaries of these real students in an area they recognize can reflect the race, culture and religious backgrounds of themselves. The museum visit will be emotional, the Mix it Up day will be enlightening, the community service will be uplifting but reading the Freedom Writers Diary plants the seed that they to could do this for their community and and their future as well.

It is very important to give these students the ability to plan, problem solve, share as well as give back to others.

By identifying with the Freedom Writers as we read it will create the desire to succeed in school, attend college and make a difference in others lives. The strategic planning skills needed for thier own future will be honed on planning our events that grow from reading The Freedom Writers Diary and the experience they encounter.
