From Seed to Service: An Organic Gardening Project

My students need a plant lighting system to grow organic vegetable and flower seedlings to plant in our school garden.

Swannanoa, NC Grades 3-5

My Students

How do you make a corrugated metal school building sitting on a US Highway a beautiful green environment for students to enjoy and learn in? The Answer: GROW LIGHTS! Students will improve their own environment and school grounds with the plants they grow all year round.

The third graders are an amazing group of children inspired by the world around them.

They have chosen to attend a charter school which is a free public school with a central mission. Our mission here is to use the arts as a tool for learning. We try to use nature to inspire the artists in ourselves, but this proves to be a huge challenge with limited green space. Our class is 75% boys who are eager to get their hands in the dirt and create. They love to be active and outside. They are an eclectic group with over half of them qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Last year for the first time we were able to send fresh garden peas home with school families in need along with the usual canned goods. The kids would really like to grow even more food this year to offer to those in need.

My Project

Your donation will give our students the opportunity of watching the magic of a seed growing into a plant that will then provide food. With grow lights in our classroom we can start before the first spring bud appears outside to create green lush plants in our classroom. Students will experience hands-on activities integrating science, math through measurement, economics of sale and donation of plants, reading and writing for research and creative writing, as well as the arts through botanical prints and music by growing plants in our classroom. They will learn many skills and concepts but also the pride that comes with being responsible citizens working to help others through plants and gardens. The funds raised by selling plants grown will be used to support future garden projects as well as providing support for other service projects. Plants grown for our school garden will provide food to be sent home in weekend food packs for our school families in need.

This donation will have benefits that will be long lasting and wide reaching.

The 3rd graders each year will get to use the grow lights and benefit from the content learned through lessons as well as the lessons from service learning. Many of our school families will benefit from having fresh produce each weekend to take home which will add a healthy boost to their families weekly meals.
