My Students

I would like for my students to write in a dual journal for Social Studies. They often write the way they speak, but writing for themselves and then later for their peers to read and respond to their writing in a correctly written way, this will help improve their overall writing.

I teach 6th grade Social Studies to at-risk students in the North Carolina projects.

I have also taught English and a combination of both subjects. However, my English background influences my Social Studies teaching methods, for I enjoy hands-on activities and I try to help improve their writing.

My Project

My students would write their impressions of a section of a chapter, a country we're studying, etc. in their composition books, and then a student would respond to the writing in red ink. This reader response journal would at first be switched within their own class and then the journal would be switched with my other Social Studies classes. I would check that students are following the prompt and are conversing well with their peers. At first, I would respond to their writing and help with corrections. With further practice, the students would respond to each other and peer edit their writing.

I believe this will positively promote better writing and thus better writing skills on their writing tests and future SAT scores.

This reader response journal writing would help my students so much that their confidence in their writing ability would grow.
