This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A new environment with many new faces can be extremely overwhelming to any student starting a new school year. Now think about starting a new school year in a new environment without the ability to communicate your wants or needs to anyone.

My classroom was created for preschoolers with Autism to have an environment that helps them with communication, socialization and regulation skills.

Although they do hold a common diagnosis of "Autism" my students are far from being similar. Each student that walks (or runs) through the door of my classroom comes with a special story that defines them more than their label of "Autism". They could be the last child of 5, a twin, an only child with a single mother; but they all require specialized, modified materials, visual supports, and patient educators to help them gain the skills they need to be successful. Some students need a picture to choose a toy, a support to breakdown a story, or a picture to request their favorite snack and all of these pictures should be readily available for these individuals.

My Project

By creating these visual supports my students will be able to transition from activity to activity regulated and independently. They will feel much more successful when they can be the ones to make a choice from a laminated choice board or pick out and request their favorite snack. My students will also use these visual supports to follow a daily schedule created with pictures and words to prepare the students of what is expected of them.

By receiving laminating film the visual supports created will be rip proof, reusable, and much more sturdy for small hands to manipulate.

These students who are primarily non verbal will be able to use these supports to successfully communicate their wants and needs in a safe and nurturing environment. These students are unable to use verbalizations and need another way to communicate. How can they successfully learn to communicate if the materials are not available?
