My Students

Budget cuts have been horrific this year throughout the school systems. Our country was hit hard with a recession and now it has finally hit our schools. Money is tight everywhere, but our children still need the basic materials to be successful in the classroom.

My school is located in a low-income neighborhood that is also full of crime.

Although my students have many obstacles in front of them, they all have a desire to learn and be successful in life. Some are harder to reach than others, but they all deserve the best. Most days, the majority of my students don't have basic materials to be successful in the classroom. There are many excuses that sometimes I find hard to believe, but they are so true. Many of their parents barely have enough money to keep food on the table let alone buy supplies. I came from a home where there was always school supplies filling the drawers. My students come from homes where cabinets are bare. Many of them tell me stories about how many gun shots they heard over the weekend or the fights their families had. They come to school on Monday tired and disheveled in dirty uniforms and incomplete homework. They come to school for safety and security. I hope to give them that and the best education possible.

My Project

6th grade is a critical year. My students now have three teachers and organization is key. I want them to start out the year all on the same page with assignment notebooks and basic materials for them to be successful. Every year I purchase many of their materials at back to school sales. I save a little out of each check for my students beginning of the year materials, but it just won't be enough. It will be especially difficult since we are expecting 35-40 students per classroom. These materials will give each and every student a positive beginning to a challenging year. I hope to continue to support their needs through the year my creating more grants for materials they may need and also to help fund some trips I would love for them to experience.

The looks on their faces when they receive these materials goes beyond any words... it will be priceless!

Each one of these kids deserves the same opportunity as the next. Having the proper supplies daily for class is one less worry they have in life. It will give them a chance to start out everyday on a positive note and feeling good. The proper materials seems to be half the battle in the classroom. I know this donation will give them a great start this fall.
